AMPHIBIANS:
TPES:
There are three groups of amphibians:
- Toads
- Salamanders
- Frogs
- Caecilians (a type of legless lizard)
- Hellbenders (a type of salamander)
- Axolotls
All three groups have many different characteristics, but they all share the same two traits: they all lay their eggs in water and they all breathe through their skin.
Salamanders:
Salamanders are amphibians that live in fresh water and damp forests. They have a moist skin and their color can vary from brown, gray to yellow. The salamander is the only species of amphibian that can regenerate its limbs, tail, heart, eyes and other organs.
Caecilians:
Caecilians are limbless amphibians that live in the soil, leaf litter, and water. They are found on every continent in the world except Antarctica.
Hellbenders:
The hellbender is a type of salamander that is native to the United States. They are known for their large size, bright colors, and ability to live in different types of water including ponds, streams, lakes, and rivers.
The hellbender can grow up to 30 inches long and weigh up to 2 pounds. They have a large head with a rounded snout that is covered with small teeth. The skin on their body is brown or dark olive green with yellowish-tan markings on the sides of their body and tail.
Hellbenders are amphibians so they have four short legs that they use for walking on land and swimming in water. They have gills which they use when they need to breathe underwater but can also breathe through their skin when they are out of water.
